The One with Trains, Bikes, Frisbee and Ribbons | Private Estate Snohomish County Wedding

Katrina and Will said their tear-and-laughter filled vows in front of friends and family at a private estate in Snohomish County.

This estate is a wonderland of sorts – working 1/4 scale trains and railroad (they rode in to their ceremony on a train!), ponds, trestles, lots of amazing rooms throughout the lodge including a bar and a soda fountain shop, They couple even had out-of-town friends and guests camp there overnight so they could stay and party as late as they want … and more. We were filled with inspiration and ideas,

As if that weren’t awesome enough, their wedding vendors were friends and family (aside from us!) – their cake was baked by a friend, the bouquets made by Katrina’s mom, the food was cooked by friends and family, Katrina’s hair and makeup was done by a friend, and their absolutely incredible officiant (seriously, he needs to do this for a living) was also a friend … every touch was someone close to them. However, they did have a few surprises up their sleeves – the guests sang them down the aisle, they rode away from the ceremony in a golf cart, Then, their first dance. It started off as traditional dances too, and then when Katrina fell to the ground, we had no idea what to expect. She rose with a ribbon (Will pulled one out too, we were all just too distracted by Katrina to notice) and they danced in a very Olympics-esque ribbon dance. But was that epic enough?? No! They ended their performance with a lift reminiscent of Dirty Dancing.

However, simplicity was the theme of the day. For the first look, Katrina walked out of the train depot to a waiting Will. Bouquets were made of sunflowers and thistle and a little ribbon. They paused during photos to play a quick game of frisbee with their wedding party. Centerpieces were slate and granite slabs with flames. It was a perfect balance of drama and whimsy – just like their venue.

I think one of my favorite parts of this couple is their unique story. I’ll let Katrina tell it:

We first met when we were 16 because we both worked and played at the same rock climbing gym.  We knew each other through mutual friends for several years, but were never really friends ourselves.  This changed when Will was teaching English in Korea and I was in the Peace Corps in Armenia.  We began talking on-line and comparing notes about living abroad.  After becoming friends this way, I invited Will on a 3-month bike trip through Eastern Europe that I was planning to go on.  He immediately said yes, and the rest is history!

We had plans to spend the weekend with friends in a cabin in the mountains for Will’s birthday (end of January).  We got there before our friends to open the place up and get the fire going.  After sitting on the couch for a while, Will proposed!  We spent the rest of the weekend celebrating with friends.

  • How fun!!! They look (and sound) like a super fun couple! I love that they came in on the train, and the ribbon dance. Those field shots are stunning!!
