A Late Summer TreeHouse Point Wedding

Su Hoon and Chris met us at a quirky coffee shop in Redmond for their initial meeting about their TreeHouse Point wedding – one of my favorites, in fact. I always know a couple is going to be adventurous and awesome when they choose to meet us at Victor’s Celtic Coffee.

We talked over drinks and chatted about their move here and amazing places they needed to add to their PNW travel list. Occasionally, Chris would steal the sweetest glances over at Su Hoon, and it made me really, really want to tell their love story.

We talked through their PNW dream of a wedding, and decided that a trip to the bottom of Snoqualmie Falls would be a must on their wedding day.

Low and behold, not 2 weeks before their wedding, I was pretty significantly injured while photographing another wedding. It left me in a walking boot, and even on crutches for several days. Being as stubborn as I am, I ditched the crutches on the day of their wedding and we made absolutely good on that promise of hiking down to the base of Snoqualmie Falls, hiking boot and all. And man, was it worth it.

Chris and Su Hoon’s TreeHouse Point wedding was one of the most relaxed and welcoming weddings we’ve had in a long time. Both bride and groom kicked back with beers during the reception (peanut butter beer for Su Hoon – I’d never heard of such a thing) and chose to not formally cut their delicious smores cake, instead eating alongside with their friends and family.

I know you really want to hear all the fun stuff about this TreeHouse Point wedding, so from Su Hoon herself:

How did the two of you meet?
Through work at the University of Nevada, Reno. Chris is a Reno native and had worked at the University for several years. Su Hoon visited the campus on a job interview one summer, and Chris sat in on one of the meetings. We joke about how Chris still remembers that Su Hoon was wearing a bright orange shirt that day. A few months later, Chris invited Su Hoon to join his friends at a New Years Eve party. From that point on, we were friends and had the same circle of friends, until we started dating about two years later.

Tell us the awesome proposal details.
We had been in a relationship for four years, living together for three and even owned a house and a dog together. Had talked about the possibility of marriage but only generally. So we were talking about seeking jobs in the Pacific Northwest that would allow us to move up here to start a new adventure. Chris’s family was having a reunion in Washington in July 2017, so we decided to pack camping gear and our dog into the car and make it a 10-day road trip up the Oregon and Washington coast. Along the way, we stopped in a bunch of towns to explore destinations for a possible future move…and other fun adventures. We camped near the beach in Oregon and on a lake in the Olympic national forest. We visited Eugene, Corvallis, Port Ludlow, and Bellingham. We got to kayak together in Puget Sound, hike with our dog in the rainforest, and spent an afternoon in Leavenworth, WA where we tried the hottest hot sauce ever…which was a mistake.

Anyway, we spent 3 days at Chris’s family’s cabin with his family, and then it was time to make a two-day drive home to Reno, NV. On the last night of the trip, we stopped to camp just outside Bend, Oregon, got our tent set up and a campfire going. At the campfire, Chris proposed. Of course Su Hoon said yes. After that, we ate smores together and called it a night. We returned home the next day and shared the news with family and friends.

Why did you choose this wedding venue?
Based on the proposal story above, we wanted to be in a location that has a very outdoorsy, Pacific Northwest feel. We also wanted something small, intimate and casual for us to spend the day with our close family members. And TreeHouse Point is a very fun, unique setting that we believe will be a great time for everyone.

What inspired the clothing choices for your TreeHouse Point wedding?
Su Hoon wanted to go with a bohemian style. Chris wanted to stay fairly traditional with some added color for flare. For our guests we simply suggested casual and colorful. In addition to the lush greenery, we just want a very colorful, fun setting.

Do you have anything special planned during your ceremony? Tell us about it.
There will be a Chinese tea ceremony to start our wedding. In this ceremony, tea symbolizes loyalty, love, and the expectation of a happily married life. It is the formal introduction of the bride and groom and an expression of respect to their families. The bride and groom will serve tea to parents. The occasion marks the moment when the two families become relatives. After drinking tea, the parents will present gifts in the form of red envelopes. Su Hoon’s grandfather and aunt will also be participating and will be served tea.

If we ran in to you on a relaxed weekend, what would you be doing?
Trying a new restaurant or exploring the city on our bikes. Or bicycling to try new restaurants/cake.
